China Technology Blogs Redux

I did this post a couple of days ago, but I have received so many good China technology blog suggestions, I wanted to re-run it as a new, more complete post.  This post is a compilation of English lanuage blogs that focus on China's Internet/technology.

  • China IWOM Blog, which describes itself as A China-focused blog on BBS, blogs, net culture, IWOM and running a company.  IWOM stands for Internet Word of Mouth.  The blog is operated by CIC, which describes itself as "the leading Internet Word of Mouth (IWOM) research and consulting firm in China," that helps its "clients make sense of the buzz found on blogs, BBS and other consumer channels.
  • Dispatch From China: Little Red Blog.  This blog is written by William Moss, whom I know and regard very highly.  William has to be one of the best writers out there on the web and he knows China media and Internet as well as anyone.  William is also the brains behind Imagethief, which is a staple for anyone wanting to understand China (particularly its media) and which has been on our blogroll pretty much since our inception.  William's Little Red Blog focuses on China tech and asks "Will the Middle Kingdom Sinicise Its Latest Barbarian Invader [i.e., the Internet].
  • Silicon Hutong.  Not strictly China technology, but all you have to do is read this post on the I-Phone in China to know David Wolf knows exactly whereof he speaks when it comes to China tech.
  • China Web2.0 Review, has as its tag-line, "Next Generation Web in China"  and it further describes itself as a "blog dedicated to track web2.0 development, review and profile web2.0 applications, business and services in China."  This blog typically writes on venture capital (VC) funding news relating to Chinese Internet companies and Chinese Internet sites.  I cannot remember a time where this blog has not provided information on a Chinese Internet site in which I had an interest.
  • China Venture News.  This blog focuses mostly on Western VC's involvement with China.
  • The Mobinode.  This relatively new site focuses mostly on the Internet in China.  It is written by Gang Lu, who has a PhD and describes himself as having research interest in : Mobility Modeling, Routing, Positioning in IEEE802.11b Mobile Adhoc Networks (MANET), Wireless Sensor Networks, Ultra Wide Band (UWB) Ad hoc Networks, VoIP, Mobile IP, Web2.0, Applications/Services in 3G/4G (e.g. mobile payment, video streaming, etc.)
  • Pacific Epoch and China Tech News.  These are not really blogs, but both are good sources for China technology news.
  • Mobile Monday Beijing, is a group of people that meet (on Mondays) regarding the mobile business in China.  Its website/blog is geared towards its members, but it often has good Chinese technology information.  The group has a very impressive "advisory board," consisting of the following:
    • Alex Chen, Vice President, China Mobile Data Business and Operation Support Center
    • Dave Carini, Director, Maverick China Research
    • Elvin Tan, VP Marketing & BD, Access Media Solutions
    • Haila Wang, CTO, France Telecom R&D Beijing
    • Kaiser Kuo, Group Director, Digital Strategy, Ogilvy China
    • Niklas Ponnert, Managing Director, Origo
    • Richard Robinson, CEO, Dada Asia
  • Andrew Lih Blog.  Though not strictly a China technology blog, it is very much focused on Chinese technology, mostly the Internet with a slant towards online collaboration. Mr. Lih describes himself as having been an "academic for ten years at Columbia University and Hong Kong University in new media and journalism" and as "currently researching a book about Wikipedia and online collaboration."
  • YouMeiTi.  YouMeiTi accurately describes itself as "?? Youth | ?? Media | ?? Technology | ?? Information............... Exploring the nexus of Chinese Youth culture, Media, Technology and Information within a global context." It is written by Tricia Wang, "a researcher who studies how adopted and improvised technologies affect social capital in fostering identity development, economic agency and collective participation among both online and physical world communities."  It is both a compilation blog and an original content blog.
  • Virtual China.  Virtual China describes itself as "an exploration of virtual experiences and environments in and about China." It is put out by the Institute for the Future's Asia Focus Program, "an independent, nonprofit strategic research group with more than 35 years of forecasting experience based in Palo Alto, CA." Its authors are Lyn Jeffery, "a cultural anthropologist and Research Director at the Institute for the Future,"Jason Li an engineering and education student at Brown University, and Kathrine Hoersted, a social anthropologist with an MA from University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Are there any more English language blogs on China technology out there in the blogosphere?

Dan, that's a great list!

I'll take the sofa on your post for a couple of details on MMBJ (which I organize):
- Mobile Monday offers information/networking 'salons' on over 30 cities globally. In China there are now almost monthly events in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. In BJ we usually have 2~5 speakers on a mobile-related topic followed by networking with the 100+ participants.
- Kaiser's title is "Kaiser Kuo, Group Director, Digital Strategy, Ogilvy China" (my mistake on our website)

Thanks!
PS: our next topic (on Jan 29) is about investment/entrepreneurship in mobile, see http://www.mobilemonday.cn/?p=58 for more details and registration. Please stop by if you are in town!

Mr. Joffe --

I would love to attend, but I rarely go to Beijing. Mostly Shanghai, Qingdao, and Dalian. Maybe next time I'm in Shanghai.

I am dying to know what you mean by "take the sofa."

I will fix Mr. Kuo's blurb.

Benjamin Joffe - January 25, 2007 8:28 PM

Thanks for the fix!
If you're in law and Internet, Beijing is the place where things are done!
'Take the sofa' is a Chinese net word for 'leaving the first comment on a blog'. The second comment has a 'stool', following ones have the 'floor'.
