Adam Minter of Shanghai Scrap has written an excellent piece for Foreign Policy Magazine, on China’s reaction to Japan’s horrible earthquake. The article is entitled, “Schadenfreude and Sympathy in Shanghai,” and it does a great job conveying the “feelings” being expressed by Chinese regarding the terrible calamity that has struck Japan.

Japan, all good people stand with you and support you as you seek to overcome this tragedy.

Update: I wrote a number of my friends in Japan to make sure they were okay and to let them know that I and the United States will be there to assist. From one of my attorney friends (who shall remain nameless) I got back a response that said that “we welcome assistance of United States but not China.” Wow. And this came without my having mentioned a word about China. Of course I knew that the animosity between China and Japan runs deep, but sometimes it takes a real life highly personalized incident to really hammer it home.

  • Viv

And the Chinese were extremely happy inside. They could not be more happy about disaster in Japan.

  • Shu-yi

I have to say that the other statement on this page is quite offensive. I am Chinese, and suffering is horrible no matter where it happens. I have nothing but sympathy for the people affected by the quake. I wish the survivors well.

  • Joseph

What’s the point of this article? By purposedly leaving out this complicated context, the article, targeting US readers, paints a twisted picture of the reality of Chinese people’s feeling. And you know it.
There are many reasons explaining this type of reaction. First the death toll, low by Chinese standards (medias were talking about 800 deaths a few days ago, it has since apparently gone up a lot). Compare it to the Sichuan earthquake a few years ago (close to 70,000 people died). This is clearly the main factor and having lived so many years in China, I tend to feel the same. It is sad, but in a country with 1.5+ billion inhabitants you tend to relativize. Its natural.
+ Also we had an earthquake in Yunnan about the same time (not covered by international media). Another factor is of course memory from the war – do you know how many millions people the Japanese killed in China (some may also remember the US nuclear-bombed Japan twice during that war).
Reminds me of two other things: (1) I know plenty of Westerners who rejoiced on 9/11 thinking the US deserved it and finally the time for payback had arrived… (2) I read articles in the European press after the Sichuan earthquake implying that it may have been caused by underground military tests and critizing government reaction, shamelessly trying to exploit the disaster as part of a PR campaign (not to mention refusing aids from fake US NGOs like those linked to the “Church” of Scientology keen to convert affected populations – remember Indonesia a few years before).

  • @ Viv , actually yes there r some stupid people in china who r happy for disaster in Japan..but most of us feel sorry and hope things will get better there..

  • Falen

It can’t be helped that the reaction is anything but complex. Regardless where you stand on the nationalist spectrum, gloating about the Japanese disaster or others is just plain stupid. I remember the same silliness back when Sichuan earthquake when some Taiwanese Faux-Japanese were gloating about “less PLA soldiers.”
Remember, the very same disaster could have very well happened in Taiwan, Korea, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, or pretty much everywhere in Asia. If you are anywhere in Asia, the one sitting in the middle of the rubble could be you. Natural disaster doesn’t care about democracy or human rights or
Ok Ok, I admit. As much as I am dismayed and shocked at the scale of the disaster, I can’t help but chuckled when the news hit that 23 SDF fighter jets are trashed by the Tsunami. Am I going to hell now?

  • Joseph

American reactions to the quake and tsunami in Japan (collected – by someone else – from twitter). Now you know why Twitter is banned in China… Enjoy. Will this get published in Foreign Policy Magazine?
“It wasnt an earthquake, it was the dolphin uprising….”
“Another earthquake in Japan – when will karma hit Taiji? The pens will crack open at Dolphin Base and the captives will return to the ocean”
“I hope the earthquake/tsunami in Japan swallows up every dolphin fishing boat!!! That would be an answered prayer = happy safe dolphins!”
“did the earthquake destroy all those japanese dolphin killers? HMPH.”
“Is it messed up that I think the earthquake is what Japan gets for bombing us at Pearl Harbor? #Karma #PayBack #WhatGoesAroundComesAround”
“you took something from the ocean Japan, and now the ocean wants something back … No more Whale and dolphin Killing ..”
“Japan, a Whale Killing Nation, suffers the wrath of Mother Nature: Earthquake and Tsunami. #Karma”
“Japan this is #Karma for Pearl Harbor!”
“Can’t help but thinking maybe the Japanese Earthquake is Karma for the dolphin and whale killings :/”
“I’ve heard that there are some SS members in Otsuchi Iwate. Are they OK after the earthquake? #seashepherd #taiji #thecove #cove”
“Serves Japan right that’s the sea getting its own back for all the dolphin killing and shark killings they do!!!”
“didnt japan kill over +1,000 American soldiers on Dec 7, 1942… #karma”
“I don’t wanna be a bitch or anything, but after the dolphin & whale slaughtering & everything else Japan does, I don’t feel bad. #karma”
“Poor Japanese. Maybe they shouldn’t have invaded Korea and China in the 50′s. #karma”
“loolz…japan get FUCK UP!!….thats for all the shark fins and whales ya’ll been fucking up in the past. #karma”
“after watching the movie, #TheCove, its kinda hard to feel sorry for #japan sorry dolphin slaughterers”
“Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, mother nature attacks them. #karma”
“Natural disasters are terrible… but I am willing to bet the Whale Wars cast is cracking brews and chuckling right about now #Karma”
“Hello World don’t send any troops or help to #japan….ask them to sign or give up killing the whales and dolphin!!!this is the time!!!”
“I’m feeling remorse for the kids and animal lovers in Japan 🙁 but do u think its karma 4 all those who eat dogs&cats and..”
“My mom is so cold. She said that she’s glad for Japan’s loss and said that it’s karma for all the things they’ve done to us Koreans, hahaha.”
“What did Japan expect? They kill dolphins. #karma”

  • Dan

    @Joseph,
What you are citing to is a shame. I have represented Sea Shepherd and that is absolutely not their official or unofficial position and I cannot imagine any of the people I know there saying anything like the comments you mention. Japan’s whaling is conducted by a tiny minority and no moral person would call for an entire country to pay such a horrible price for the actions of so few. In fact, no moral person would call for the death of that minority. Sea Shepherd strenuously works never to harm anyone, including, in particular the whalers and the dolphin killers.
It also bears mentioning that even before the earthquake it appeared as though Japan was giving up its whaling program, so those who believe the earthquake was a result of their whaling have even their facts wrong.
What your comments show (and what we all already knew) is that there is a lot of hatred out there from all people.

  • Bren

I can’t believe 90% of what has been posted by “civilized” people…shame on all of you. You speak of Karma??? Watch out for it for being so stupidly mean. There are innocent CHILDREN in Japan!! How can you wish ill thoughts on so many innocent people?

  • Richard Parker

This is not about the Chinese or the Japanese. This is about yet another “media” source trying to start trouble in the world by throwing out controversial bait for those who confuse these sites with the news. Thoughtless people all over the world say unkind things. This is not news and not worth our time. If this site had any access to important news sources whatsoever, they wouldn’t be writing this tripe.

I agree, but this is Foreign Policy Magazine, quoted by China Law Blog. Both respectable enough imho.

Some very silly comments here, and stupid ones especially from Viv, that being sad I will pray for Japan, and wish them the best.

  • dacey

im from china.. i love US and Japn… i dont get why they be so mean.. i dont care about the history .. it so boring.. whatever im working about people dying and our earth… we hurting our eaRTH WE NEED TO SAVE THE EARTH AND ALL THE COUNTRY

  • It is definitely a disaster what happened in Japan, no doubt about it. I also noticed some news about earthquakes in China for recent past but it’s quite difficult to obtain some relevant information about Chinese occurrences. I feel sorry for anyone who suffers because of natural disasters. It is worth considering why is this all happening? Is it because of huge impact of human’s activities on environment or is it just a coincidence because things have developed in this way?

  • Winston

How VERY disturbing it is to see such comments referring to “karma” from the 1942 attack on Pearl Harbor; how did those people miss the fact that the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 killed many times more people (over 140,000 deaths, mostly civilians) than Pearl Harbor (2403 deaths, mostly military). And how many Japanese WWII veterans are still alive anyway? Ridiculous. Think about it: Although the current disaster is unfathomably horrific, the atomic bombs in 1945 probably killed a lot more people than this earthquake and tsunami have.

  • I’m sure most Chinese people feel badly and their sympathy goes out to the people of Japan. But the question is, is the Chinese government lifting a finger, much less sending a bottle of water, to help the people recover from this devistation? If and when something like this happens in China, what do they expect from the rest of the world? Unlike China, of course the United States would be the first country to their aid. We help everyone regardless of our relationship with their government. We’re trying to get along with the rest of the world while others are trying to conquer!

  • Matt

This isn’t a matter of karma or morals concerning what the japanese have done in the past. This is a matter of the tradgedy of human loss. In the past 10 years there have been horrific tradgedies that have occured all across the world. When America was attacked by terrorists we expected the same sympathy/help that japan needs right now. Im sure its easy for some of you to sit at your computer and try to make clever and nasty remarks of how japan “deserves” this, well as far as im concerned, your moral compases are so messed up i’m surprised you found your way to your computer. People have died in a horrible disaster, so grow up, rethink your morals and consider what they are going through, because while you sit there saying they deserve it, japan is going through a natural disaster that towers hurricane katrina. This is a tradgic event, and my sympathies go out to all affected by it.

  • AN Mohan

Those who complain about the publishing of these comments are way off base. The truth shall set you free. Why hide it just because it is unpleasant?

  • jack

how could you ask those innocent peoples that been kill by the japanese soldier during ww2 to rest in peace where untill today the japanese goverment did not appologise for what they have done .newly elected prime minister always pay respect to those ww2 japanese soldier when they got elected. japanese govt.even amend their history book saying that they soldiers did not commit any war crime, did not invade other countries but simoly help to reform their govt. i am truly sorry for the japanese people but tell me this is not karma

  • Dan

    @ jack,
Look at this picture of a four month old baby who was rescued and then I fucking dare you to tell me how it would have been karma had that baby died. http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/03/15/miracles-in-japan-four-month-old-baby-70-year-old-woman-found-alive/.
I have my beefs with Japan, including the fact that it has never really come clean on WWII. But there is no way my world view would ever allow me to believe that karma includes wiping out thousands of innocents for something others did 60 years ago.

  • sunny van

china should help Japan to get over this big disaster ,even though Japan had envaded china in the past ,that become the past ,now we need help each other to build a harmonious society.

I’m a little bit more troubled by the comment referencing the “1942” Pearl Harbor attack than the actual intentions of its writer.

  • B

Don’t really have much to add, but I do think a lot of Americans are fucked up (sorry to those of you who have a brain who have to live with the others over there).

Even women that were taken away during WWII as sex slaves from Korea are praying for Japan at this time. Can you imagine your uterus being ripped out of your body so you can be raped over and over again? Japanese still till this day refuse to apologize for all this evil doings, not just to Koreans but also to Chinese. God bless these women for having such forgiving hearts.

  • kim

I think the comments left on here are pretty telling as well.

  • Ann

    @玎
While there are sympathetic Chinese who are sorry for what happened, the majority are happy. I’m ashamed to admit this, but it is true. Just from skimming through some Chinese forums, I found numerous negative threads about this tragic disaster; in one of them, a person said, “90% of Chinese are happy of what happened, 9% neutral and 1% truly sad. The replies that followed all mostly said something along the line of karma or I don’t give a crap. You can find that thread at “搜狐” if you want to verify this. The attitude is disgusting, but I doubt that it would change, at least not until another few generations with the whole “Japan is evil” preaching in China.

  • hoa hong nguyen

what I really hate to hear from the Chinese is hating the Japanese till now and so many Chinese feel happy with Japan disaster ( I have some Chinese colleages who even showed that obviously ) for what the Japanese did to their country in world war II , and they even talked about Karma ( deserved bad things due to bad things done in the past) .
However , they ignore completely what their Chinese have been done to many small countries around them .
OUR VIETNAMESE HISTORY IS FULL OF BLOOD DUE TO CHINA’ EXTREMELY CRUEL INVASION AND CONTROL, AND DUE TO OUR FIGHTING BACK TO GED RID OF THEM .
SO , IF THINK ABOUT YOUR FAMILY & COUNTRY ‘ HURT & MISERY , THEN ALSO SHOULD USE YOUR HEART AND BRAIN TO FEEL AND THINK ABOUT THE HURT & MISERY OF THE OTHER PEOPLE AND COUNTRIES WHEN BEING INVADED AND TREATED CRUELY AND CRAZILY BY YOUR PEOPLE AND COUNTRY .
The Japanese did one time invasion to your country , but they helped your country a lot after that .
Your China have been invaded or trying to invade our Vietnam and exploited everything so many times .
If the Japanese should have Karma , your Chinese should have much more Karma .
The personality , morality , good heart , self -esteem & character of your Chinese need to learn much much more from the other countries , especially from the Japanese ( far behind)

  • david le

to Jack and Jenny Kim and other Chinese .
Talking about what Japanese did to the China . How about what China did to the other countries , such as Vietnam , Korean , Tibet …Especially Vietnam : much smaller and weaker , always receive your country invasion : kill , rob , rape , force to work as slavers , exploiting… so cruel as human being can ever did .
Karma to the Japanese , How about Karma to your Chinese . ,
not very far in the past , in 1979 , communist China was upset with Vietnam for some orders not being taken( Vietnam must follow whatever China want .) or else , all fake things are presented and China declared : so need to teach Vietnam a lesson . Then streams of Chinese soldiers invaded Vietnam , in a very short time , killed , raped and destroyed many villages . Many Chinese soldiers even did not need to use guns , just used big swords to cut all bodies ..blood , blood …..However , Chinese history always hide things from the Chinese and always call for patriotism . What kind of patriotism when hated to be invaded , but ok to invade the other countries .
I do not know if all my words here will be posted officially or not for all of your Chinese to read .
But I hope yes , because I do not say here with my hatred . I just tell the truth .
Use you brain and heart of human beings : be good , fair to the other countries .
Your Chinese are lucky to have big country with many natural resources . Do not think that your people have the right to invade the other countries and causing so many terrible and miserable things to the other people . Do not blame Japanese not to apologize and hide the history ( at least they agreed they invaded but just denied to kill , rape crazily ) . But your country denied everything , and even hipocratically say : we just wanted to civilize them or teach them .
PLEASE , ACT AS HUMAN BEINGS .

  • Joseph

Reading Ann’s comment above, I feel I have to repost the following I already posted in response another article in this blog. This is probably needed to put the Chinese reaction in perspective:
The history of China-Japan relations during and after WW2 can only be understood by Westerners if compared to that of those Western Allies vs. Germany. Anyone from Western Europe knows the constant apologies, the prevalence of WW2 in history books, the deep consequences it has had on the modern Western worlds (all the way to Palestine…). To this day, Germany is still apologizing, several times a year, for its crimes (mostly towards the Jews btw, Russians have long been forgotten by the West…. so let’s not even imagine they understand what happened in the Far East). There are still lawsuits and massive lobbying actions related to WW2 (recently against the French Railway company, whose workers were once famed for their heroic resistance, now accused of collaborating with the Nazis and asked to pay) etc. Any movie covering the “Shoah” is ensured to receive media coverage, likely to become a box office success and to receive a prize. The list is almost endless. There are countries (including mine) where I could be prosecuted for writing this, as I may seem to diminish the crimes committed against the Jews (I certainly don’t, if I did, I would be fined and possibly jailed).
Now compare this to what you see in China!
You may also want to look up WW2 death toll on Wikipedia.

To All the Chinese Who are Happy that Japan are Having a Tragic Time… On T.V and Chinese blog sites there are some Chinese who are happy or call it Karma what is unfolding in Japan. You have bitterness because of what Japan did in WW2? For goodness sake..what type of human are you? That was over 60 years ago…Us people in the west do not wish the Chinese unhappiness or call it karma when grief befits your country in times of natural disasters. We don’t say it is your karma on what you have done to other nationalities. You are a human as like a Japanese, a European or African. We all have freewill, the same colour blood, the same human search for the pursuit of happiness and harmony. People who wish unhappiness on others are tragically unhappy with themselves..those who are happy at what has happened to the Japanese should hang their heads in shame. Life is always a polarity. If there were no darkness there would be no light. If there were no trouble there could never be any peace. If the sun always shone you would not appreciate it. You have to learn sometimes through conditions that seem a nuisance. One day you will look back and say, “We learned our best lessons not when the sun was shining, but when the storm was at its greatest, when the thunder roared, the lightning flashed, the clouds obscured the sun and all seemed dark and hopeless”. It is only when the soul is in adversity that some of its greatest possibilities can be realised. LOVE FOR ALL HUMANS SOLVES MANY PROBLEMS. Thank you to all the wonderful Chinese who are assisting the Japanese. You are admired by many around the world for your act of LOVE.

  • David Le

    To Jenny Kim & Ann
Even if Jenny Kim are Korean , You still can read my notes about how cruel the Chinese towards other countries , including your Korean . It means that any country and its people can be very bad if the government at these times made cruel and crazy decisions (such as Hiler and faxicism , but the German nowadays are generally very nice and good )
And eventhough the Vietnamses have long term hatred to the Chinese as the most enenmy because of their inhuman invasion and control our country, we still feel very sad and willing to pray and help the Chinese whenever they have miserable diasters . In fact , I have many good Chinese friends , and one of my closest friends is Chinese .
The writing above just let everyone know that innocent people deserve our care, concern , compassion and help , it does not matter their countries caused bad to our country in the past . And whoever still blame the Japanese for world war II ( I read a lot of comments of the Chinese saying Karma is for the Japanese now ) , please read my comment to understand deeply that no Chinese deserve blaming the Japanese if they do not accept their more cruel things done ( and still continue their arrogant and controlling behaviour nowadays ) to the other countries .
    Thanks

FROM A JAPANESE TO ALL CHINESE PEOPLE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SENDING HELP!!! THE CHINESE PEOPLE ARE HONORABLE HUMAN BEINGS. JAPAN APPRECIATES ALL THE HELP YOU HAVE OFFERED IN OUR TIME OF NEED. THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS DIRECTED TOWARD CHINA ARE FROM ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF IGNORANT JAPANESE CITIZENS. THANK YOU AGAIN CHINA, A VERY HONORABLE AND APPRECIATED GESTURE ON YOUR PART. JAPANESE AND CHINESE ARE NAMES WE WERE GIVEN AT BIRTH, BUT WE ARE ALL FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS!!! EVEN THOUGH I AM JAPANESE, I HAVE VERY VERY MANY CHINESE FRIENDS

  • @tadashi: my condolences and deep sympathy to you and the people in Japan right now.
I myself am Chinese (Chinese-Indonesian), and I am deeply touched by reading your comment above.
For so long time, I have also agreed and think like you do: that we are all FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS, regardless of what the past government, politics, and warmongers did in the past (each country has its OWN mistake in regards to this), but I am sure that there are still so many ordinary, common, normal people who do have heart & compassion, who are now feeling deep sympathy and sadness, as well as sending prayers and helping Japan!
Like you also, I have known some very nice Japanese friends, and in NO WAY at all they resembled or have any short-minded racism, hatred, and all negative things! Those are the things in the past, and now we have to move on, and embrace ourselves together, for a better future for all of us, in peace, harmony, happiness, and love!
We are all fellow human beings, living under one beloved planet: Earth.
Variations in race, ethnicity, nationality, culture etc should add richness and depth and feeling thankful for such variations, not separate us or causing hatred.
    With much love,

I am a Vietnamese Canadian . I would like to have my opinions here ( as I believe that these opinios are quite similar to those of most Vietnamese ) :
    – The Japanese really deserve admiration : Not only on their excellent character , behavior , attitude exposed in this worst disaster , but also for their great contribution and help to our world charities and activites, especially for poor people and poor countries . Their country contributes a lot , a lot of money to the world ( like the American ) . Any country has some mistakes and negative things , but the Japanese and American ,in reality ,are still by far the most contributors for world help . Everyone can tell that China will never become a world leader if no democracy , no improving in human rights and other bad character & attitude ( cheating & spying technology at any mean much more any country , selling poisonous items and food all over the world , do not care about disposal of wastes as long as get benefits from decreasing price to beat the other products ….) , and especially no big contribution to world charity and other help . All of you may not pay attention to this , but try to look for the true statistics , will understand .
    – we really like the Japanese and we think that the Japanese are the hope and pride for our Asian . The Japanese are helping our country a lot . We learn a lot of things from them.
    – Yes , we do not like the Chinese , but it is not really because of their long term invasion and cruel things done to our Vietnam and other countries , but mainly because their continuing causing problems to other small neighboring countries like us and trying to control all .
They declared almost more than 80% Asian sea as their sea . They caught and damaged all ships going to the areas they declared their own , even though the international solving is not yet settled because many countries objected that unreasonable declaration . They even entered deep to VN sea coast , played “hit and run” many times. They try to control VN by economics and corruptions ( between VN officials and Chinese officials ) . They are filling VN with all fake items , poisonous items . The Chinese make our trading market up & down , follow what they want . They got most of projects with the government by dirty tricks and games , exploitin most of natural sources , but do not care about disposal system . Generally , they interfere , play bad games , and control small countries around . VN is trying to fight back , but we are not sure we can be out of them , Lao & Cambodia are almost under their control , they seem can do whatever they want , explore any natural resources they like . Just like rich become more rich by very bad ways .
However the Japanese are not like that . They do business and trading , and also want to get benefits for them , but also try to be fair & good to the others too , and especially they have no corruption and keep well on justice .
I have to write down this during this event , because I would like all Chinese and others understand that we love the Japanese and pray for them with our hearts and we hope that all countries and their people can become like that .
We also hope that China will be no more communist ( so VN can be out of communism too ) , and China can become as good , helpful , considerate , fair and caring as Japan as a big country , so our VN will be relieved and happy to have one neighbor like that .
But I really doubt about that . China has so many problems in morality , attitude , education , government …. Now the communist government are trying to ignore all problems ,. rather provke patriotism strongly . This kind of patriotism and country pride , in fact , is very dangerous for the Chinese and the world . Because this can suppress justice , fairness , morality , good heart and compassion …when China and its people can do anything by using any way as long as to make country become rich and then feel very satisfied and proud . But they forget that country like a family principle : it is rather poorer but have all good morality , good heart ……than richer but hurt and damage the others . It is what good parents teaching .and I do not know how the Chinese are taught and their country is run .
( one small story happened all the times : our VN objecte some orders from China , then China government proveked that the Vietnamese are rude to our country and connecting to USA and others to agaisnt us and rude to us , and many VN ships dared to hit our ships and caused a lot of problems . Then there are alot of comments on Chinese internet , one is that : go to destroy VN , go to teach them like 1979 for them know why dare to do like that . Reading that I feel very unhappy and sorry for the whole brainwahsed generations , how can they believe that VN can dare to do like that , it is patriotism?? why they do not understand that it is just when CHina government want VN to obey completely , then do that way >
They should know that VN is very small and weak compared to China , we are really scared of all threatening from China and avoid maximum all things can provoke China (just like the other countries , like Philipine recently also have problems of China ships hit and run in the area , but still try to say that : keep calm , do not provoke China ) . So , see how miserable our country . But even if we are scared of them , if they try to invade our country , we definitely fight them back completely . Unfortunately , they are trying to control all countries around by black markets , by dirty tricks and games .
Pray The Japanese keep wealth , health in order to help the other countries .
We are with the Japanese with our love , our respect , and our hope .
    Thanks

to Jack and all Chinese who are the same with crazy Jack
Again , I would like to say :
IF THE JAPANESE HAVE TO RECEIVE KARMA , YOUR CHINESE SHOULD RECEIVE MUCH MORE KARMA .
YOUR BIG CHINA COUNTRY IS ALWAYS VERY MUCH INVADING , CONTROLLING , CRUEL , INHUMAN , ARROGANT , GETTING BENEFITS REGARDLESS OF THE OTHERS’ SAFETY , EXPLOITING , MEAN , WICKED , BAD MORALITY , EXTREMELY HIPPOCRATIC TOWARDS THE OTHER COUNTRIES .
( here , I mention your China country which is now under communism and follow all paths mentioned above , not regarding all your Chinese )
NO NEED TO COMPARE JAPAN WITH CHINA BECAUSE HUMAN BEING CAN NOT BE COMPARED WITH ANIMALREGARDLESS HOW STRONG ANIMAL IS . ANIMAL STILL BITE CRAZILY AND UNREASONABLY .
ANIMAL CAN ONLY BE COMPARED WHEN IT BECOMES HUMAN BEING WHEN UNDERSTAND ABOUT HUMAN JUSTICE , FAIRNESS , GOOD HEART , COMPASSION , MORALITY , SELF ESTEEM , DEMOCRACY …..
( sorry to use strong word , but the meaning is true and accurate to describe them )
.PRAY & WISH THE BEST TO THE JAPANESE
( BY THE WAY , TALKING ABOUT KARMA , YOUR CHINESE MEANS THAT PEOPLE HAVE SOMETHING VERY BAD HAPPENED . HOW ABOUT YOUR CHINA PEOPLE LIFE FOR SO MANY YEARS UNDER STUPID & INHUMAN COMMUNISM. WHY YOUR CHINA FORGOT SO EASILY : MUCH MORE THAN 20 MILLIONS OF CHINESE DIED FROM MANY STAGES OF ” JUMPING STATGERY ” OF COMMUNISM AND ALL LIVING IN SO BAD CONDITIONS FOR YEARS ,WHILE JAPAN , KOREAN , TAIWAN , HONGKONG… ENJOY VERY GOOD LIFE .
AFTER LIVING IN ANIMAL CONDITIONS , THEN BECOME RICHTHANKS TO MANY FACTORS (BUT NOT DUE TO GOOD MORALITY ) , BUT SOCIETY BECOME DISORDER AND SHAPRLY DECREASING MORALITY , ONLY NEED MONEY & POWER , MONEY & POWER , POLLUTIONS EVERYWHERE , MORE AND MORE INVADING AND VIOLENT , NO TRUE DEMOCRACY , CORRUPTION EVERY WHERE ……
SO , EVERYONE CAN SEE WHICH COUNTRY IS RECEIVING KARMA , IF TALKING ABOUT KARMA .

Japan was horrible before and during WWII. That cannot be disputed. It also cannot be disputed that Japan has not fessed up to its actions nearly as much as it should. Having said that, however, I still do not understand the mentality of those who believe this justifies the horrible deaths that have befallen that nation. Hatred has to stop at some point and I will also note that no country is without fault or blame.

  • I’m from Malaysia. First and foremost, you should understand we are NOT happy and rejoicing over the tsunami over Japan. In actuality, we too, are saddened and many of us have prayed, and our Chinese religious foundations have even organised Masses and rituals for the dead and survivors. When you younger generation expressed your displeasure towards the Chinese for saying the natural disaster is a karma, you should understand what most of us have been through.
The Japanese broke into our villages. and for no apparent reason, snatched our people, including women and children, dragging them to the streets and beheaded them on the road curbs. The roadsides were piled by heaps of heads. It was pure massacre, they kill you just because they did not like your face. I can still recall the horrifying sight until today. Entire families were even killed. The entire village was almost wiped out. Others were tortured, such as by forcing the victim to drink chilli water until bloated, and later stepped upon in the abdomen until the stomach burst open like a water baloon, the guts strewn everywhere. In my country, almost every family would have at least a member being victimised during the Japanese occupation.
Nevertheless, though we are saddened by the tsunami, most of us still believe it as a heavenly punishment, maybe as a way to console ourselves on the past that has befallen us. So when you make comments, just try to understand. We are just as saddened as you are on the disaster in Japan.

Your question : why should people feel bad for them? they don’t feel bad for all the crime they committed.
    answer :
    1) as human being, we feel bad for and try to help all people who meet unlucky, miserable and difficult situations. If you are not, you are not human being , the same kind of animal or evil. Go to ask your parents and all old Chinese how they taught you. If they have the same your statement, People can understand why you are acting beyond human being ‘s actions.
    2) that question should be from many other countries to ask your country . China has been long as a cruel , inhuman, wicked invader to the other countries, killed so many so many innocent people of the other countries. Your feel hurt for your people Chinese , how about the other people of the other countries. They are innocent human beings too.
And your China much much more than any country to ignore and deny its crimes.
Any way , your leader Mao killed more than 20 millions of Chinese and you feel ok?
So, many people from the other countries more than enough hate to your China , but we still have sympathy if your people have diasters or difficulties, because we are human being , not animal.
LEARN TO LIVE WITH HUMAN BRAIN AND HEART. YOUR BRAIN TO UNDERSTAND THE TRUTH AND JUSTICE , FAIRNESS. THE HEART HELP YOU TO FEEL THE MISERY OF OTHER PEOPLE OF OTHER COUNTRIES , REGARDLESS THEY ARE YOUR ENEMY OR YOUR OPPOSITE GROUPS.

I DO NOT THINK ABOUT KARMA FOR THE CHINESE LIKE ALL OF YOU THINK TOWARDS THE JAPANESE , BUT IF TALKING ABOUT KARMA ( = HEAVEN PUNISHMENT) , WE CAN SEE CHINA HAS BEEN RECEIVING VERY BAD KARMA .
BECAUSE CHINA MUCH MORE CRUEL THAN JAPAN ( NANKING MASSACRE IS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT YOUR CHINESE KILLED THE OTHER PEOPLE OF OTHER COUNTRIES)

  • mike

Please, be fair , do not cut the contents.
To those Chinese talking about Karma = heaven punishment= diaster to one country ( currently on Japan which so far , withouth nuclear explosion yet , having around 20,000 -30,000 deaths .
    Let see some numbers:
    -Armenia 1988 earthquake 100,000 deaths
    -Bangladesh 1991 flooding:139,000 death and 1970 cyclone+floods: >500,000 deaths
-China 1976 earthquake >250,000 deaths and sichuan earthquake 2004~ 70,000 deaths, worst flooding of Yellow River in 1887 > 900,000 deaths.
    – Haiti earthquake 2010 > 220,000 deaths .
-Iran earthquake 1990 >50,000 deaths and earthquake 2003 >25,000 deaths.
    -Pakistan 2005 earthquake > 50,000 deaths –
    – Tsunami 2004 mainly in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailan, Malaysia> 230,000 deaths.
    – Turkmenistan 1948 earthquake >111,000 deaths.
    – Turkey earthquake 1999 > 17 000 deaths . –
-Vietnam 1971 Flood of Red river >100,000 deaths .
…..etc …..a lot a lot more for many countries.
So who is to say this Japan disaster is from Karma?

  • kevin

    @david le
Hi, I’m sorry that you have such negative mentality towards the Chinese people and it’s saddening to see the way you generalise every one in that country. It sounded as though you were applying your philosophy to everyone in China, but you know, generalisation won’t do anything. Truth is, many do actually feel sad about the tragedy in Japan, I for one do (it was heart breaking to hear this in the midst of finals in San Diego), my whole family does (sister is helping her Japanese professor at UC Davis to collect money for donation), and I’m sure we aren’t the only. I’m a Chinese from Hong Kong, and believe me, most do feel sorry for the Japanese. I have not heard from a friend from Hong Kong who is happy about such a disaster in Japan.
Anyway, I just hope you are not generalising all the Chinese for what you have heard or learned about history. For this would only be very unfair for others who are “human being,” according to your dictionary.

  • kevin

    david le,
And honestly, most of us have very differing backgrounds. Some were victims of WWII, some from younger generations like us, we have no idea who has gone through what. I’m not biased but judging from your way of speaking, it may seem a bit immature to generalise all of the Chinese/Koreans people as cold-blooded animals.
And Billy does have a point, some have been through very cruel treatments from the Japanese, it’s understandable therefore, that some would think in such manner (note that I’m not saying it’s moral) and believe me, many people’s lives were changed dramatically after the war. We can also assume that you have been through cruel treatment from the Chinese by just judging your statements, but is this true? Maybe or maybe not. So when a Vietnamese person speaks filth of the Chinese and brings up all the negative things the Chinese has done to his/her country and not willing to help with the earthquake in China earlier, you would call him a cold blooded animal? Have you considered his//her past? Maybe the person is someone who’s gone through a lot of bad experiences with the Chinese. And no you shouldn’t call him a cold blooded animal because you don’t entirely understand what he’s been through, and to generalise the whole Vietnamese popularity for such mentality and thus cold blooded animals, would you call this just? I don’t think you would, because not everyone think this way.
We all see from a different perspective and we all grew up in a different background. I think it’s good to sometime take a look from another person’s perspective, a person who has a different background especially, and go from there. There are events that happened in the past that make the person to think in a particular way, and before you conclude that the Chinese/Koreans non non-human beings, you should consider such factors. They may not necessarily think right according to our standard, but there are causes and effects, if you would buy it.

  • Eddie

See, here’s the thing. I’m not happy (read: I feel sorry) that they have been struck by a natural disaster, but every bit of instinct in me is telling me that I shouldn’t be helping them either. It would be the moral equivalence of donating one of my kidneys to save someone who murdered my family.
A lot of people seem to confuse sympathy and forgiveness. Should we feel sympathetic? Probably yes. Should we forgive the Japanese? Probably not.
Here’s the problem with the Chinese Internet crowd (or the Internet crowd in general): it is not a place to be rational, and is not representative of the majority of the demography either. Which is why this article is misleading as hell. It’s almost as if you went on 4chan/b/ to conduct a national wide survey about the US.

    To Kelvin
I think that you should spend your time to criticise the Chinese like Wiki, Nastassia, Billy ….and abundant more Chinese are bombing the Japanes on many websites about their hatred and feeling Karma for the Japanese ( eventhough there are 2 groups : one group do not really feel sorry or even happy for the Japanese disaster , but the other group felt sympathy but still expressed hatred and said it is Karma ) .
Obviously I am talking about those Chinese like that ( so , I am writing to Wiki , Jack and the Chinese – means whoever the same as them ), if not like them , why I and the others care to mention about ) . I am sorry that if my writing make you feel that I am trying generalisation of the Chinese . Of course , everyone understands that no country which has all bad persons. But I can not write again and again the Chinese who hate and blame the Japanese , or the Chinese who are the same with Wiki , Nastassia…. It will make the writing very very long . So people reading should understand the paragraphs talking about the Chinese who showed hatred and blamed Japan ( you see , again and again to repeat that ?) .
I am living in Toronto and having many Chinese friends .I agree with you that none of my friends from Hongkong , Taiwan or other countries talked about the hatred or even Karma at all , just express their compassion . But. I have many friends who are mainland Chinese and they did talk about hatred and Karma towards Japan ( coincidence or different views towards the world ?) . I am working in health care system and accidentally most of my patients are Chinese ( 1/2 from mainland China and 1/2 from the other areas ) ,but I love and care about them as the same way towards the Vietnamese and other ethnic patients.
I and other VIetnamese bring up any topic about the long term hatred between China and Vietnam only because we were so terrible about many inhuman comments from many Chinese . We , Vietnamse , do not try to express our hatred here , but to emphasize for those crazy Chinese understand that they should deeply review all aspects of China actions and doing . So , they will be more forgiving and understanding . Because no one dare to put to much hatred and blame on the others , when themselves doing wrong or even worse.
And also , when people talking about one event between one country to one country , we talk about that country under certain government in certain time . I mentioned about how cruel and inhuman China invasion to Vietnam ( not Hongkong , Taiwan, Macao , Singapore …) . It is the way everyone generelizes in writing . And The Chinese at that moment represent to the China at that moment. For example , when you read : USA attacked Iraq , the Iraqui devoted to fight back the American and hate them …..doesnot mean generalization the people in the way you mentioned about , but hint in the way of the government actions.
Any way, our Vietnamese comments has no intention to provoke or emphasize about our country and our people towards China and its people.
And, it is better not to be so focused on or misled that someone is “devalueing” your people . It is better to focus on how cruel , inhuman and bad from many Chinese towards the Japanese and you should help us to criticize their attitude. unfortunately , finally you still fall in to covering for them and make reader feel that they have the points to have that attitude ( like Billy said that he still think that it is heaven punishment to Japan ) . WHY YOU IGNORE EASILY CRUEL AND CRAZY ASPECTS OF THINKING AND VIEWING OR THOSE CHINESE , JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE YOUR CHINESE .?? DO YOU THINK THAT YOU ARE FAIR AND IN JUSTICE ??
I am living with the Westerners . I can see that many of them are very fair . They will point out in details whoever said / done wrong it does not matter that wrong person is the same as their ethnic , country or family . Your writing seem try to be understanding and fair . But in fact and unfortunately , you need more opportunies and life experience to really stand for fairness and justice . AND THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR ANY ONE TO KEEP FAIRNESS AND JUSTICE IS TO BE AGAINST WRONG DOINGS OF PEOPLE THE SAME ETHNIC OR SAME COUNTRY OR SAME FAMILY . IT IS EASY TO SAID THAN DONE AND IT IS MORE EASY WHEN OPPOSE TO THE OTHERS WHO ARE NOT THE SAME TREE.
You are better to read again and feel about how miserable of the other countries because of China. and all Vietnamese writing just mean: all Chinese who are in hatred to the Japanese should forgive the Japanese because your China has been much worse , and if talking about Karma , China should receive more Karma ( but any way , I never view any disaster as kind of Karma ) .
And if something happen to China and any bad Chinese , I and many Vietnamese still feel very much in sympathy and want to help .
IF I KNOW ANY VIETNAMESE WHO SHOW HAPPY OR DO NOT CARE , DO NOT FEEL WORRIED AND SORRY FOR CHINA OR THE CHINESE WHEN THEY ARE IN A DIASTER , I WILL STILL TELL THOSE VIETNAMSES DIRECTLY THAT THEY ARE INHUMAN AND COLD BLOODED., NO MATTER HOW MUCH EXPERIENCED THEIR FAMILY WENT THROUGH WITH CHINA AS A COUNTRY OR SOME CHINESE.
BECAUSE WE SHOULD NOT BE CRAZY TO BLAME THE OTHER INNOCENT PEOPLE.
AND ANY WAY , I AM TRULY HAPPY THAT IF NOT MAJORITY OF CHINESE ( EVEN IN MAINLAND CHINA ) LIKE WIKI, NASTASSIA……., BUT REALLITY, MAY NOT. AND ALL OF US ARE REALLY AFRAID THAT IF THE HATRED AND WRONG THINKING SRPEAD OVER.
SO,PLEASE TRY TO HAVE MORE COMMENTS AND ACTIONS TO STOP WRONG THINGS FROM MANY CHINESE TO MAKE THEM ACTING RIGHT. DO NOT TRY TO CRITICIZE AND FIND FAULTS WITH THE OTHER COMMENTS TOUCHING THE CHINESE AND NEVER USE PAST TO JUSTIFY BAD THINGS , ESPECIALLY VERY OBVIOUS THAT MANY COMMENTS HERE JUST FROM THE GENERATIONS WHO ARE NOT DEALING DIRECTLY THE EVENT OF JAPANESE INVASION.
Any way , again , sorry that I do not have any generalization of any people . Reading all criticism towards the Chinese of any comment should be understood that the comments want to hit to the Chinese who keep hatred and say Karma to the innocent Japanese who are really suffering .
Talking about Karma , please read more information about the number of deaths ( some on Mike provided ) to see that no country is receiving Karma because so many countries received very bad diasters .
    Thanks /

  • It’s unbelievable that there could be any Chinese people who are happy about Japan’s disaster despite their hostility. Anyway, I hope not all of them are so cruel and react absolutely calmly. There is a factor of humanity anyhow…

    to Eddie
Do not try to defense those Chinese full of hatred like you. Do not try to mislead people with your sympathy but still do have hatred to blame or do not want to hate.
DO NOT USE UNMATCHING EXAMPLES TO RATIONAL YOUR LOGIC TO MISLEAD THINGS.
    1) Your example are so direct and personal experience i
Say : how many Chinese who stated hatred and Karma , and do not really like to help have direct father , mother , siblings killed or destroyed by The Japanese?
and how many Japanese suffering from disater really have direct relatives committing crimes .
    2) this is more towards country to country and its people to its people generally .
Remember : this world is full of killing between people in country to country .
If everyone takes his country and his people suffering ‘s wrongdoing person as his real enemy , the whole world will be upside down and collapsed .
Yes , you feel some frustrated and hesitang when you have to give the innocent son of the person who killed your daddy , but you still SHOULD give ( if you are close to dying ) and you SHOULD NOT SAY it is Karma of that boy having that bad kidney disease .
And for sure , you can not and should not have the same level of frustration and hesitance when the boy who you will give your kidney have the father who killed one of your Chinese ( much much less or not at all frustration and hesitation , or else you are a CRAZY person )
And if see with more open mind , the people of one country shoulde not be blamed and burdened the mistakes and crimes of the previous governments ., Because so many governments of many countries have done mistakes and wrongdothings . Therefore , to make this world better and more peaceful , people have to lie down the hatred. And that will lead to real fairness , justice and conscience .
And remember , your country ( China , not Hongkong , Taiwan …) also made a lot of crimes and wrongdoings too .
Return to the example , if your dad is a criminal too and killed the others , then obviously if you do not ignore or deny that , you will feel much less frustration and hesitation to give kidney to the son, Because in this situation you will truly understand the offspring has nothing to be frustrated and hated , then you will achieve the high level of human being.
So , always remember that ALL VICTIMS ARE INNOCENT PEOPLE .
If you or any Chinese would like to fight for justice for your country , then just do it ( for example , strkes to ask The Japanese to apologise ) but
    1) always review your country and your people crimes or mistakes and still deny.
    2) fight for what you think is justice , different from showing hatred or hesitation to help , or say Karma , and worst even show happy to THE VICTIMS OF ANY DISASTER AND UNLUCKY SITUATIONS.
THAT IS NO WAY TO BE ACCEPTED .ANY SAYING AND RATIONING ARE JUST DEFENDING YOUR BAD HEART. vERY BAD , VERY BAD.

“NO NEED TO COMPARE JAPAN WITH CHINA BECAUSE HUMAN BEING CAN NOT BE COMPARED WITH ANIMALREGARDLESS HOW STRONG ANIMAL IS . ANIMAL STILL BITE CRAZILY AND UNREASONABLY”
Really? Is this your argument? By insulting Chinese people, or by comparing them to animasl? Is this really how you’re trying to get your point acrosss?
You talk about traits such as human justice, fairness, compassion, but I feel like these traits that you don’t have. “MUCH MORE THAN 20 MILLIONS OF CHINESE DIED FROM MANY STAGES OF ” JUMPING STATGERY ” OF COMMUNISM AND ALL LIVING IN SO BAD CONDITIONS FOR YEARS ,WHILE JAPAN , KOREAN , TAIWAN , HONGKONG… ENJOY VERY GOOD LIFE .” You almost sound pleased about what these 20 million, innocent, Chinese citizens had to go through. Is this something a just, fair, and compassionate person would say?
“SO , EVERYONE CAN SEE WHICH COUNTRY IS RECEIVING KARMA , IF TALKING ABOUT KARMA . ”
If you want people to stop talking about karma, maybe you should lead by example. Two wrongs don’t make a right, you know.

  • hoahong nguyen

To N . and any Chinese the same your thinking .
1)I wrote things to ” China ” means the country which contain most of bad Chinese who blame all over again and again the Japanese. And those Chinese ( you had to read all the comments above my comment and in other websites bombing the hatred to Japan ) even said that all Chinese and China have the same attitude . Eventhough I do not think that all Chinese of China have the same attitude . However , it seem convincing that there is majority of Chinese in CHina have that crazy hatred.
Yes , if your China contained majority of people like those wrote all over like that . I still say that it is animal . My writing is for those like that to read , when they assumed first that all Chinese inside hate and enjoy Japan disaster , then I have to use their assumption to say back to them .
I do not try to insult good Chinese . Sorry to make things vague and misunderstanding. But , honestly , all Chinese comments to show their hatred during Japan disaster are really shocking .
    2) But for the deaths of people under jumping statgery , I think that you are so sensitive in the wrong way and acting to accuse me in such funny rational .
when I said about the fact that more than 20 millions of deaths at that period of time , obviously in order to let all of your mainland China understood which are more terrible to blame .
your thinking turn out to say that my sound seemed pleased ??? what made you think my sound almost pleased . Did you understand at all the meaning and purpose of my writing .
Remember , any one or any government , it does not matter it is your own government or outsider government , you should feel terrible and gruesome with the deaths and miserable lives they made.
    3) NO NEED TO SAY THAT YOU ARE VERY UNREASONALBE AND SENSITIVE WHEN I MENTIONED : IF TALKING ABOUT KARMA ……
i myself do not believe and want to talk about Karma at all . But I feel very upset and annoyed with the way YOUR BAD CHINESE bring the topic of Japan disaster to say happily karma ,karma , karma all over many websites .
Of course , I think that it is stupid and unreasonalbe and cruel to talk about Karma . So IT IS THE REASON WHY I USED THE WORD ” IF ” TO START MY SENTENCE ” IF TALKING ABOUT KARMA = PEOPLE DEATHS OR SUFFERING FROM ONE HUMAN OR NATURAL DISASTER IN THE WAY YOUR BAD CHINESE USED ” . I have to point out that , Hey your bad Chinese whoever used KARMA to talk towards Japan , open your eyes and your brain to look back to your history to see : so many people died from thingns ( human or natural disasters ) . then if you depend on people deaths and sufferings to say Karma to one country , so your country is actually receiving more Karma
. My reasoning and number are used for those who think and talk about Karma to the Japaness . IT is so obvious that no need to explain . But your N. did not understand ande still put on blames of cruelty on me , instead of put your blames on bad and cruel Chinese who provoked the conscience of the world first .
Is it the way your Chinese reaction ???. You guys always bomb people comments with so many things , but ignore the bad and cruel comments of your bad Chinese first .
READ ALL COMMENTS ABOVE BEFORE BOMBING ONE COMMENT OPPOSE YOU.
READ ALL INHUMAN REACTIONS OF YOUR BAD CHINESE ALL OVER .
READ ALL COMMENTS ABOUT THE OTHERS TRYING TO STOP THAT ATTITUDE AND REASONING BACK THE WRONG THINGS THE BAD CHINESE SAY .
READ ALL COMMENTS TO ASK YOUR GOOD CHINESE , PLEASE TRY TO STOP AND CRITICZE ALL YOUR BAD CHINESE TO BRING TO GOOD CHINA FOR PEOPLE LOVE AND RESPECT .
DO NOT BE SENSITIVE ABOUT THE OTHER COMMENTS AND USE YOUR FEELINGS TO BOMB US WITH WHAT YOU ARE OVERSENSITIVE , WHILE DARE NOT TOUCH THE BAD CHINESE .
    thanks

” If You want people to stop talking about Karma, maybe you should lead by example ”
.So which way to make abundant Chinese stop happyly saying karma to the Japanese??
Let the whole world know. We thank for that.
Hoahongnguyen obviously did not believe in Karma . But she chose the method of arguing by using ” your stick turns back to hit yourself “. She gave the fact of much more Chinese people in China died after world war II by human and natural disasters in order to let those Chinese aware that how wrong they used disaster to one country as an example of Karma.
This method of arguing is quite normal and makes good hit. People who read will not misunderstand that the writer is the person who follow and belive in Karma.
Therefore, she emphasized ” if talking about Karma ” ( = if like the bad Chinese used the way to depend on the number of deaths from one disaster as Karma ) , those bad Chinese should be ashamed and stop saying Karma to Japan, or else they are hiting back themselves.
For more than 20 millions of deaths under communism in such period of times when many other countries enjoy their lives. It is just the truth and the fact. And she used that for helping her to point out more strongly how stupid and wrong the bad Chinese said about Karma towards the Japanese. I do not see anything to show that she sounded pleased towards the misery of the Chinese as you said.
However I think that you are right to be upset what she wrote so strong: China as animal……
She was shocked and upset about so many Chinese comments cruely towards the Japanese and she wanted to fight back to those bad Chinese, but her writing made the readers think she talked about the whole China and caused negative effects.

People are strange, when you’re a stranger.

  • Patti Morey

Just wondering, are the Chinese still detonating explosives underground in Sichuan Province for their Jinping underground laboratory? Are there other underground laboratories they’re working on? Things like that might have repercussions, a la Chengdu..

  • I loved the food and culture of China. I found out it’s very vague to say which culture is right or wrong. People misunderstand a lot about China too, Chinese have so many ethnics just like USA. These different ethnics have different feelings “moral values”. The major of them is the “Hans” and the hatred you have heard were from them “Hans” (source of group: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_groups_in_China). Look at the table: the 1st and 2nd… the difference in number, 1.2 billion vs 20 millions. But when China talks to the public (the world and UN), they talked how diversed they are. Remember Chinese Olympics? They showed how many ethnics groups they have… and here are the songs in youtube to promote China unity http://www.youtube.com/user/chinesecivilization
Now into the “hatred by Hans”: in literatures, in scriptures, in books, and online sites including fictional writer (whom cite facts into their own e-novels like qidian.com, xsxs520.com, xidalu.com, 58xsw.com & others. In these fictional stories written by authors, commenters, readers (these comments and view counts to ten to hundred millions per day)… more than half of these fictional novels: in somewhere, have used words describe other nationals as: “Europians = stupid bird men, children of birds” ( I had a hard time understand it, but I found out the Hans Chinese don’t like Angels of Christianity); they wrote “Japanese = devils son” (due to the World War II, they felt Japan is a small country but defeat them a big country, defeat their China’s Proud), the word “China” itself is “civilized center of the universal, any other form of existence outside of China is uncivilized”; the Hans Chinese wrote “African or anyone with darker skins then them” as “gorillas”; they wrote “Vietnamese” as “chimpanzees”; “Indians (of India-Asia)” as “mules” , etc… Another important issue: Chinese won’t give the “citizenship” away to anyone that marries their citizens. So if you are non-Chinese, and marry a Chinese in China, and want to settle down… good lucks, no citizenship for you, if something happens, you’ll be kicked out of the country. “If you have $, you’re welcome to stay. If you don’t have any $, please get out, our social welfare is only for paid-tax Chinese citizens.”
The Hans Chinese overall, they have hatred toward Europians because of The Opium War, Chinese blamed drugs and crimes and gangs were created by that War. Of course you know the World War II with Japan. Just in these 2 wars, Japanese Soldiers and Europians (along with American) soldiers took stuffs from the country, souvenirs, gifts, treasures, jewelries by different means (good/bad). Now these souvenirs of war are currently being display in National Museum of different countries: Japan, USA, UK, Germany, France, Russia, etc… many many many newspapers, books, literatures wrote about “sadness of Chinese treasures STOLEN” from the Chinese people by those “Westernized war loving countries”. And they intentionally forgot that their ancestors wiped out many ethnics and many countries, killed and enslave the whole country they colonized.
Internet sites, forums, and published books and articles had numerous fans on articles about “plans to revenge”.
-They wrote plans how to invade Japan by destroy the Japan’s Navy so Japan will be isolated and start bombing the Japanese, they all will die. Or find a way to explode at ocean floor around Japan and activate strong earthquakes and bury Japan.
-They wrote plans how to invade USA and other Western countries: send spies and activate nuclear powers to kill all people in that country. Or sell those with wealthy economy “countries” cheap stuffs so their economy will turns bad. Or plans of how to destroy schools and research centers in USA so that USA’s technology will go backward and China can go forward and “Americans can kiss our Chinese’s ass!”
-They also wrote plans for other countries around China as well, even the “Takeover Vietnam just in 3 days”.
The modern Hans Chinese literature always mentioned how cruel other countries are. But in they forgot about what “cruel” means. In those truth novels & fictional novels (hundred thousands new novels per week) mentioned if Chinese enter war, there will be no “slaves” and no “survivors”, only the Chinese wins. From reading them, I was scared of the hatred-minds the writers or commenters were. They used the word “total wipe out” for any invasion they will make. And they disgrace other countries for being cruel during wars. The Hans Chinese always have a dream, they WANT All Asia ruled under China by “all means” in the future. And they will teach their descendants about continuing with the dream.
    This site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_history_of_China_before_1911 listed how many wars as “civil” within China involving Hans Chinese.
http://www.zum.de/whkmla/military/china/milxchina.html listed most wars with outsiders “non-civil wars”

I remember while Sichuan earthquake happens, Sharon Stone and other Americans also feel happy about it. At this point, Americans have no right to judge Chinese as stupid because there also some stupid and cold blood Americans like Sharon Stone.

  • Well in war and disaster we see the best and worst of mankind, all of us. My thinking is its best to simply live by the golden rule—do onto others as you would have then do onto you. The people who suffer in Sendai and other cities had nothing to do with the atrocities of Japan’s past , no more than they did with some of the great achievements of Japan most likely. So to hold them accountable for either good or bad is ridiculous. The fact is they may need help and if we can give it we should just like you want if you were in their situation.
Its really rather insane , a form of mental illness to sit around and debate if its karma for all people in one group or another, Groups are made up of individuals. So focus on them rather than the group in which all countries and nations have bad moments and good moments.
All China, korea, Japan, America, France, Vietnam , Germany have both bad and good parts so focus on the good , forget the bad and learn from that.

I’ve read every single post on this, and I have to say, this is turning out to be more of a Chinese-bashing topic than China’s real reaction to Japan’s earthquake. I’m disappointed at all of you who throw impressive statistics and historic facts around but flawed logic and interpretations behind them. You must think you are famous historians/interpretators to talk the way you do, without even knowing the basic rawness of human instincts.
There are Chinese people who don’t like Japan (millions), there are Japanese people who don’t like China, and as proven, Vietnamese who don’t like China, polar bears who don’t like penguins…the list goes on. Some of those people wish pure evil things on each other; people can’t help it if those are their beliefs. Are you saying that you have never once in your life wished harm on another person, because you…say, hated them, for a reason that’s either justified or not? If not, then you are the one who isn’t human (or maybe you’re a saint). Humans hate, cheat, steal, rape, make errors (sometimes even proud of them). Those of you who have mentioned China’s crimes—are you saying over 5000+ years, China will just continuously graciously send resources to other small countries and gradually let us be dissolved in other cultures? Are you saying out of the 1.3 billion people (less in history, of course), no one should feel psychotic and insensitive to others’ pain? If you are criticizing over what China has done in the past, then why are you saying no Chinese on Sogou shouldn’t do that to Japan?
For some (keyword is some) Chinese people who have had great effects and who hate the Japanese, telling them to forgive Japan is like telling a rape victim to forgive the criminal for his crimes. I’ve seen and talked to those people. If you can’t respect that, then you must either be really naive or have never had an ounce of hardship in your life.
@Ann – ‘90% of Chinese people are happy that Japan is in distress.’ And you say it’s disgusting to hear it. It’s even more disgusting for you to re-post untrue statistics. Have you went around China and asked everyone if they’ve donated? Have you watched the news and confirmed that China’s sealing off all support to Japan?
Out of this number of posts, I’m surprised not one of you mentioned the actual numbers, real pictures and fundraisers in China to help Japan (I’m guessing those people are probably out going door-to-door trying to collect money instead of sitting on this site praying and complaining). And this is all having suffered an earthquake just one day prior to Japan. Go on, I dare you to look them up and come back here to post that Chinese people are heartless bastards who will never be a leader in the world because we’re communist.
Most of you (a VERY large number) are being hypocritical by saying ‘I don’t mean to insult the good Chinese people’, then go on three paragraphs about how much you hate the ‘brainwashed’ nation for not donating to Japan. Really, it makes me laugh how obvious it is yet none of you see it.
I’ve been touched deeply by three extremely different sides of the world at a young age. I’ve seen the terrors of the Second-Sino Japanese War around the age of 5 and have never forgotten it. And you may say that it’s been 60 years, but it has happened. Having seen so much more since I was 5, however, I believe that my experiences with those different styles of living, those cultures and beliefs, have made me unbiased and indifferent to these useless arguments. If you want to waste your time on it, so be it, but don’t do it irrelevantly and openly. Brainwashed generation? I don’t think so. Our generation’s vomiting over your shallow comments and the anger expressed here that will only destroy your health.

Thank you, Lina. Your response was one of the few intelligent, rational, well-thought-out, *reasonable,* and logical posts on this forum. ~From an US citizen.

All I will say is this. People in all of these Asian countries have to stop being so cruel to animals. It is vile. In Korea, man’s best friend the dog is raised in disgusting cramped conditions, then hung and tortured to a slow death in full view of his fellow dogs, in the twisted belief that his suffering as his life ebbs away will make his meat taste better. Do these people seriously want to be considered as real human beings by the civilised world?

lol common dude get ur facts straight. That doesn’t happen anymore and hasn’t happened in over a decade. Also I don’t see you talking crap about French or US for that matter for cruelty against animals that persists to today. Why? are dogs better than chickens or geese? U r such a huge hypocrite and a brainless dimwit.

  • At least it wasn’t America’s reaction. “No, we can’t help or acknowledge what happened because… the waves in Hawaii were high today. Hey everyone! We’re getting high waves today!”

  • china should have helped Japan to get over this big disaster ,neighbors should be helping each other like U.S and Canada and many other countries .
