China’s Internet. Explained.

Posted in China Business, Recommended Reading

Someone today asked me for good articles on China’s Internet and I told him to start with “China’s Internet: The Invisible Birdcage.” This article was written by Bill Bishop and it does an excellent job explaining the theories and policies regarding China’s Internet.

If you have an interest in China’s Internet, I recommend you read it.

The Birdcage article claims that the idea that China shuts out foreigners from the Internet market is a misconception. Yet the article itself reveals China’s Internet protectionist policies which prevent foreign companies from making money from online gaming without a local partner.
Alibaba had to spin off Alipay to eliminate foreign ownership by Yahoo and Softbank because it wanted to make Alipay into an online bank. Banking is an industry in China which forbids foreign ownership.

I’ve heard that WFOEs are not itself allowed to earn money online in China. Is that right?
Seems to me like China IS shutting out foreigners from making money online in China.

Thanks for sharing – this article gives a good overview on how China’s Internet works. Besides the numbers nothing changed the past two years…

If I were the Chinese I would use foreign money to do everything I could. Then I would kick them out. The Chinese can learn much from Western mistakes. They build and build, while we outsource and outsource to foreign countries. Too bad our government isn’t as interested in protectiong the U.S. as China is in protecting China.

Personally,I would love to see the U.S. block Baidu, Youku, Tuduo, and Kaixing, just to see what kind of reaction they get.
