Beijing Olympics Quote Of The Day
Of course this one is late, but I just heard it on The Daily Show, where Jon Stewart refers to the little girl who sang the opening night song, but whose face did not make it on TV:
You thought your middle school days were tough? Imagine if your government got together and decided you were not cute.
UPDATE: Some consider Stewart worthy of deification and use him as part of their graduate level syllabus. On a somewhat related note (using pop culture as a learning device), while listening to Bruce Springsteen's, The Rising, this morning, I concluded that if one listened to every song by Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Marvin Gaye, one ought to get at least 16 hours college credit in sociology, political science and US history, 1965-2008. Do you agree?

Brilliant comment. Luckily the poor girl is young enough to put this behind her.

I thought the accurate version was, the government thought you were the second best looking girl with the best voice, and a couple of British reporters thought you were ugly and told everyone about it.

William,
Either that or she will be scarred for life.

JXie,
Either way, it will feel the same for the poor kid.

Marvin Gaye I get. Greatest National Anthem ever sung. I also get Dylan and the Boss, but only for the social activism and lyrics. But to have to actually listen to Dylan and Bruce sing to get college credits would be a college I would not attend, and I've attended a lot of them...

Mr. Lane,
I believe you misunderstood me. I did not propose these three greats be required for a degree, merely that credit be given for listening.
I do have to admit that I have enough of a problem getting my kids to listen to Dylan and Bruce, and getting them to actually listen to the words is even tougher. But, I have gotten them to admit that lines like "sometimes you think you've lost everything, then you find out you can lose a little more" are better than "meet me in the car, it's going down...."

Dan,
No Snoop Dog, Garth Brooks or Brittany Spears on your list of such icons? :)

If you started the course with Quicksilver's Happy Trails album, side one, I'd agree. Every serious meal requires an appetizer to awaken the taste buds.
