Beijing Subway 101

Leave it to CNReviews to come out with a clearly written post on how to get around Beijing using Beijing's subway. The post is entitled, "Beijing Subway Guide: of Tickets and Faregates," and it does an excellent job setting out the dos and don'ts. If I might add one "do" of my own: do use the subway system as it is oftentimes the fastest way to get around: I truly cannot think of another city where I have consistently had to wait so long for a taxi as Beijing.

guess you've never visited Italy...lol

You can get just about everything a backpacker could possibly want in the street stalls around the area. Except Febreeze for some reason. You'd have thought that was a fairly indispensable backpacking item.

People in Beijing have drivers Dan just like LA. You need to listen to more California clients, hire a local Zhonghuaren and buy a Red Flag, and pretend your en route to the Viper Club. No-one takes taxis in the Big Lychee.

I've been in Beijing this week, and I have yet to take the subway. I figured with half the private cars off the street, all of those drivers would be swamping the subway system.

The upside is that, after a taking several taxis a day for nearly a week, I have yet to wait longer than 30 seconds for a taxi. And taxi drivers don't require me to go through a metal detector or open my bag. (Oooops! Maybe I'm giving ideas to terrorists!)

Try Shanghai on a rainy day or during rush hour. Taxi? Forget it! Beijing is easy compared to Shanghai.
