Everything You Always Wanted To Know About A Chinese LLM

Posted by Dan on May 27, 2008 at 11:24 PM

Law Professor Donald Clarke, of Chinese Law Prof Blog fame, has compiled an extremely helpful compilation of views on the pros and cons of Westerners' securing an advanced law degree, or LLM, from a Chinese law school. The compilation can be found here (h/t to China Esquire).

What do you all think?

Along these same lines, Above the Law just did a post, entitled, "The Asia Chronicles: Picking a Firm," describing what to look for in an Asian international law firm at which to work.

UPDATE: Stan Abrams over at China Hearsay has just weighed in with what sounds to me like excellent advice regarding Chinese LLMs, in a post entitled, "The Value of a China LLM."

I have qualifications in 3 other legal systems (none of them USA) and have nearly completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Chinese Commercial Law, run by a Belgian University in conjunction with 2 well known Chinese Universities. For me in Shanghai, where I have lived for 2 years, this course has accelerated my learning process of China as a whole and greatly enhanced my ability to understand both Chinese business practices and China compliance requirements.I would be the first to admit that I would not have learnt enought for me to hold my own in a professional law firm.

I am currently living in China and considering doing an LLM in Beijing.I would love to read this article. Unfortunately, even with a proxy you cant access the article in China. Any suggestions how to access?

thx a lot
this is exactly what i need

ATL's Asia posts are informative, though some of them are blatant in their desire to recruit US attorneys... the Asia Chronicles is sponsored by Kinney Recruiting, so I think the posts need to be read with that in mind. I think the last post on U.S. v. British firm culture is probably the most helpful post so far.
