China's Olympics. Darfur. Steven Spielberg. Take It Away, ImageThief
I was going to do a post surveying the blogosphere on Steven Spielberg's decision to pull out of the Olympics. My post was going to highlight Mutant Palm'sand Silicon Hutong's posts because I know the writers behind those two blogs really understand China and because I found their posts extremely interesting and thoughtful.
But ImageThief has completely beaten me to it in his post, "Steven Spielberg pulls out of the Olympics - Updated." And since he has done a better job than I would have done, I am just going to say that if you are interested in seeing different perspectives on Spielberg's Darfur decision, you have to go here.

China is simply a scapegoat
After so many years of inaction and indifference by the West, we suddenly want to blame Darfur on China? There are plenty of blame to go around, starting with our support of the SPLA and John Garang 10 years ago:

At any rate the original Darfur mess we started has since been replaced with inter-tribal conflict and herdsmen fighting for territory. Beijing has little influence over that.

mr china's post was obviously silly. and that doesnt really represent "we chinese".
steven has the pressure on him, and its reasonable he chose to give up.
but there's one thing we need to warn him:
olympics can never be political! if you dont understand this, then you dont deserve to be the director of it!

Q. What is the difference between the Berlin and Beijing Olympics?

Jim,
With all due disrespect, your question and answer are simplistic and wrong-headed. The difference between the Berlin and Beijing Olympics is that the Germans were a bunch of racist Nazis seeking to take over the world and China is not. The Nazi appellation should not be flung around loosely (which is exactly what you are doing here) both because it is a horrible lie to fling it at those who do not deserve it and because it minimizes what the Nazis did. I suggest you read up on the Nazis and then come back here in a couple of years.

Jim, I'm sorry. I am NOT pro nazi. BUt you should understand that when the olympics were starting and decided not many knew what HItler was out to do... And I think there is a defined similarity and a worthy comparison between CHina and Berlin. WHy should the rest of the world sit back and support the repressed things going on in the world?

When is the world going to start calling China on its double standards? First of all Human Rights are not a political issue, they are a shared universal value in the 21st century, especially if you want to trade and prosper with the rest of the world. 2) China always penalizes trade partners for political objectives (e.g. Taiwan, Tibet), yet when the international community is dealing with China, China proclaims strongly that politics must be decoupled from politics/olympics. The Olympics are about Universal sportmanship and universal human rights to sportsmanship. Hello Blind Hypocritical Kumbaya International Community. Open your eyes before Communist China puts your lights out permanently in your blindness!
