BREAKING NEWS: CLB's Steve Dickinson To Appear On CCTV International On Thursday, April 19

Posted by Dan on April 15, 2007 at 04:00 AM

On Thursday, April 19, China time, China Law Blog's own Steve Dickinson will be appearing on CCTV International's Dialogue program to discuss China intellectual property protection.   The focus of the show will be on China's current regime for protecting IP and, in particular, its impact on foreign companies.

Dialogue is hosted by Yang Rui Tian Wei.  Wikipedia refers to it as "formatted similar to Larry King Live and Imus in the Morning, [my link] in which the talks are generally political in nature."  CCTV describes Dialogue as follows:

Dialogue is one of the most acclaimed and influential programs on CCTV International. This 30 minute current affairs news magazine is an authoritative talk show designed to inform and educate viewers worldwide and influence decision makers in governments, businesses and academia.

Dialogue provides fair and comprehensive analysis of current affairs within the framework of cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary comparisons. Chinese and foreign guests openly express their opinions on issues making headlines in China and around the world. Through frank discussions, and sometimes heated debates, viewers are encouraged to reach their own conclusions.

The taping of the show will be on Tuesday and we think it will appear on air on Thursday, April 19, at 7:30am, 1:00 pm and on Friday at 1:30am.  We will update you as soon as we learn more.

Dan, I wish I was still in China so that I could watch the interview on CCTV. I shall be relying on you and your China-based readers for a detailed report.

"one of the most acclaimed and influential programs on CCTV International" eh?

In terms of plaudits that's up there with "the best food in England"....

Tell Steve that he's got to get Yang Rui to shut the hell up, as his questions last about five minutes and are more like a lecture. Also, it's a pokey, round studio - here's hoping Steve's not claustophobic or prone to dizzyness.

Errrmm.... Tuesday is the 17th. No need to publish this comment, just make the correction. Thanks

I would consider it a great personal favour if, at the end of the interview, you could punch Yang Rui hard in the face. I have little doubt that you will already be predisposed to taking this action by that point anyway.

I used to watch Dialogue a lot when I did my internship in Beijing/Jinan. I always thought it was a little dry, but informative in terms of providing one example of how mainland China TV frames world events (not knowing Chinese, this was the only program accessible to me). I particularly always had a chuckle when the host referred to Taiwan as "the renegade province" in a very serious and indignant tone.

Although I won't see the broadcast, I hope it is a good one.

Shawn

Most of the CCTV programs are available over Internet. Check the top right corner of the following link. Steve's segment should be online two or three days after it's air.

I really like Dialogue, its one of the more watchable shows on CCTV. Good luck to Steve and hope to see video (or a transcript or something) up on the site!

Knock em dead, Steve.

Does China have a YouTube equivalent so someone can record it for us and upload it there? Or better yet, someone upload it on YouTube and start a Copyright debate since the topic is IP!!

MAJ --

We will try to get the video. Failing that, we will try to have a transcript up. Failing that, a summary.

Went I first started going to England, I would describe it as the only place where the beer was warmer than the food. But London now has some of the best restaurants in the world, non British though, as far as I know. Not sure if there is any analogy here for Chinese TV, but ....

Can one survive in China with clausterphobia?

spb --

Too late. It's up and it's much appreciated. I have made the correction.

TaiTai --

Steve is under strict orders NOT to punch anyone on TV.

Shawn in Tokyo --

Is there a TV talk show host anywhere in the world who is not self-important?

David Li --

Thanks for the link. We will definitely post on this again once it goes online.

I too have always enjoyed the show. It is sometimes frustrating, of course, but at the same time, it is usually pretty thoughtful too. We will definitely be running a post-show post as soon as we have more to report.

Bart --

I will assume you mean it metaphorically and not the way TaiTai would mean it (see above) so we will thank you.

David --

Good idea all around.

I am sure that one the two OPPONENTS will -at least- mention the current feud between Danone and Wahaha founder Zong Qinghou about trademark and nationalism.

I watched Dialouge last night, and the host billed it as a "live" show.

Not only will this be the first TV program that I've ever wanted to watch in 7 years in China, but it'll also be the first one I've seen a listing for before it was on and the only TV show outside of the NBA Finals that I've ever actually scheduled time for.

Nice going--all that despite Yang Rui's sardonic mug peering across the table at Steve.

Dan, the airing times for Dialogue are 0.30 am,7.30 am, 1.00 pm, and 7.30 pm daily, Beijing local time, not as you mentioned. Not sure which one will be the initial airing and which will be repeats for your segment though.

Romain Guerel (French working in Beijing)--

I don't think it came up. The show was taped on Tuesday and I guess CCTV is holding off on it until Thursday (or maybe later).

DD --

I am appalled that you would schedule time for the NBA Finals and not for the NCAA finals. Repent!

Lo Kok Kee --

You are right. I will make the change as soon as it is actually confirmed as to when Steve's show will air. It was taped on Tuesday and there is now an 80% chance it will be airing on Thursday.
