China Matters -- In Dealing With China And Taiwan, The Snub's The Thing

Posted by Dan on May 14, 2006 at 11:15 AM

Around twice a week, the China Matters Blog puts out a thoughtful and well reasoned post on big issues involving China, mostly on diplomacy and politics.  The other day it did a very good piece on China, the U.S. and Darfur, entitled, "The Darfur Gambit: Countering China While Winning Hearts, Minds, and Wallets in Africa."  The blog's most recent post, entitled, "Foggy Bottom in the Driver's Seat on China Policy," nicely analyzes U.S. diplomacy towards China and Taiwanand how the U.S. State Department is starting to call more of the shots on U.S. dealings with China and Taiwan using "snub" diplomacy.

China Matters Blog is written anonymously by someone who describes him or herself and his or her blog as follows:

I speak Chinese fluently and have lived and worked in Asia for 25 years. During that time, I've observed the ebb and flow of tensions between the United States and China. The current situation is unique--and uniquely dangerous. I believe the current under-reporting and mis-reporting concerning China has serious implications for U.S. foreign policy and the American people. This blog seeks to remedy that informational shortcoming, and promote and contribute to America's foreign policy debate concerning China with authoritative news, analysis from a regional and historical perspective, and informed opinion. The views expressed herein are solely my own. I write this blog pseudononymously to protect my ability to continue to travel and work inside China.

The China Matters Blog is an excellent source for "deep think" analysis on U.S.-Chinese relations and I am adding it to our blogroll.

For those who want to read more on Taiwan relations, I suggest checking out China Confidential's post, entitled, "Taiwan Plans Big Anti-Appeasement Campaign," and Asia Business Law Blog's post, entitled, "The USA Hopes to Elicit Cooperation From China by Distancing Itself From Taiwan."

» A Diplomatic Victory for Taiwan Asia Business Law
In light of today?s breaking news regarding Libya and the advantage?s Taiwan lends the US military in the Pacific, it seems unlikely that the US is ready to horse-trade Taiwan for stability with mainland China. []
